Clean the wall with rubbing alcohol or a glass cleaner-type product and a lint-free cloth to remove dust/debris. Allow to dry completely for at least one hour. This step is extremely important for the adhesive to stick properly to the surface.
A clean removal (minimal to no damage to walls) depends on the existing condition of the wall(s)/paint, i.e., existing cracks/peeling, older drywall*, etc. For optimal removal, the surface should be prepared with a quality paint/paint job. When removing the mouldings from the wall, be sure to remove them very, very slowly. You’ll hear the adhesive making a crackling noise, and once one small area releases, slowly move on to the next area.Check out our removal tips video here. If there is any damage upon removal, it can easily be patched with spackling paste, such as DryDex® Dry Time Indicator Spackling by DAP.
If the walls are not level, i.e., as sometimes happens in older homes and apartments, there may be gapping between the moulding and the wall. Using a large level or similar straight edge, hold it against the wall; you will be able to see if this might be of concern to you or not. When the mouldings are installed as a permanent application, caulking them in place will fill in any gaps should the walls in your new home not be level.
*The removal process works best on newer drywall that has been properly installed, primed, and painted. Some inferior drywall / Gypsum board was used in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s, which is more vulnerable to damage. If this is the case, extra care should be taken in the removal of this adhesive. If any damage does occur, we recommend DryDex® Dry Time Indicator Spackling paste by Dap to patch affected areas.
